Australian Olympiad Selections: 20 Game Rule Deadline for Turkey Olympiad Prospective applicants for Olympiad selection to represent Australia in either the Open or Women’s team at the 40th FIDE Olympiad are advised that the ACF Council has ruled that the deadline for each applicant to have played at least 20 games in the previous year will be March 31, 2012. An applicant must have played at least 20 standard games (not rapid or blitz) that are rated by the ACF, FIDE or a national organisation for which rating formula conversion details are known and the playing of the games can be verified. Players who have not played at least 20 such games will be ruled ineligible for selection. The Olympiad will be held in Istanbul, Turkey and is scheduled for August 27 - Sep 10 2012. Detailed information is not yet available. A call for applications for selections will be issued by the ACF in due course. Kevin Bonham ACF Vice-President |

Victorian Title Events The 2012 Victorian Women’s Championship will be played at the Box Hill Chess Club on September 29-30 and October 6-7. More information is available form the BHCC newsletter here. The Canterbury Juniors Club is hosting the 2012 Victorian Junior Championship in June and July. The U8, U10 and U12 will be played as a single tournament on June 30 and July 1, with the U14, U16 and U18 also as a single tournament from July 9 to 13. See here for more information. Both clubs meet at 3 Rochester Road, Canterbury. NSW Country Championship The 2012 NSW Country Championship was conducted as part of the Newcastle Open (February 12-13), the title being awarded to the highest played NSW country resident. It was won by Trent Parker with 4.5/6. ACT Title Events FM Endre Ambrus was the convincing winner of the 2012 ACT Lightning Championship, scoring 10 wins and a single loss. He finished a point and half ahead of Roger Farrell and FM Junta Ikeda, with IM Andrew Brown a further half point back. Ambrus's only loss was to Farrell in round 6, and he defeated everyone else who finished in 8th place or better. Farrell kept pace with Ambrus up until round 8, when a draw with WIM Emma Guo caused him to fall behind. Ikeda recovered from a slow start (1.5/3) but his loss to Ambrus in round 8 ended his winning chances. 33 players took part in the tournament, which offered $600 in prizes ($300 for first). Full results of the event can be found at link. Shaun Press on chessexpress The 2012 ACT Chess Championships will be held on the weekends of 17/18/19 and 25/26 Feb at the Vikings Club in Erindale. A registration form is provided here. I would like to strongly encourage all ACT players to support this event. It does clash with a new Grand Prix event at Hornsby. However, it was agreed last year that the ACT Championships would be run prior to the Canberra Day weekend. All players must be members of the ACTCA. Each club will be collecting ACTCA fees during the first couple of club meetings. Fees are $25, and $15 for concession holders and juniors. Glenn Ingham Tasmanian Title Events The 2012 Tasmanian Championship will be played at Havenview Primary School, Marriott St, Burnie Tasmania 7320 on 10-12 March. TOURNAMENT REPORTS
2012 Melbourne Chess Club Australia Day Weekender Tournament report by Arbiter Kerry Stead The Melbourne Chess Club started the year with its annual Australia Day Weekender. This year’s event attracted 25 players, with two FIDE Masters, Melbourne local Michael Baron & visiting Italian Patrick Scharrer being the top seeds. The top 10 players in the event were rated above 1800, which made for a very competitive event, where the players battled not only each other, but the oppressive summer heat of Melbourne. The first few rounds were relatively uneventful, with most results going according to rating, however juniors Max Chew Lee & Jack Puccini both held their higher rated opponents to draws in round 2. Round 3 was the start of the real action in the event, with top seed Michael Baron being defeated by Sylvester Urban after making a very un-Baronesque blunder. In other results, David Beaumont managed to win a tactical game against Ari Dale, while Jack Puccini recovered from a poor opening to draw against Max Chew Lee. In upset results, Tristan Krstevski beat Finley Dale & Joseph Wong held Gary Bekker to a draw. The weekend turned into a battle of who could cope with the heat the best, with the lack of air conditioning adding to the challenge of playing the tournament. Carl Gorka won a tactical battle against Sylvester Urban, while Michael Baron survived a scare from David Beaumont, who missed an excellent opportunity in a two rooks against queen ending. Mario Palma & Jason Chew scored upset wins, while Jimmy Ying & Jack Puccini drew against higher rated opponents. The afternoon round saw plenty of fighting chess, with all games being decisive. Scharrer, Baron & Urban all won to share the lead on 4/5 at the end of the day, while Max Chew Lee defeated David Beaumont to claim another scalp for the juniors and Ruben Nowak won a marathon encounter against the higher rated Rad Chmiel, which went well over the four hour mark. Sunday saw ice & more fans being brought into the tournament hall in an effort to make the playing conditions more bearable for the players. Jack Puccini revelled in these conditions & disposed of the more fancied Sylvester Urban in a tactical struggle. Michael Baron won the battle of the FIDE Masters, eventually grinding out a win against Patrick Scharrer in a rook ending after appearing to be slightly worse for much of the early part of the game. In other games, Max Chew Lee & Jason Chew both held their higher rated opponents to draws. The final round saw fighting chess on the top boards, as players fought for a share of the prize money. Michael Baron secured first place with a win over Jack Puccini, who had one of his best ever tournament results. Patrick Scharrer & Max Chew Lee both won their last round games to move to 5/7 and a share of 2nd place. They were later joined by Ari Dale, who won a very unbalanced game against Carl Gorka when Carl overstepped the time limit trying to figure out the complications. The last game to finish was Palma-Chmiel, which was a game of changing fortunes between two players who were within sight of the leaders throughout the event. Hopefully we will see many of these players and plenty of new faces at Melbourne Chess Club for the upcoming Club Championship or the ANZAC Day weekender in April! Prize winners: Open1st: Michael Baron 6/7 =2nd (sharing 3rd & U1800) Max Chew Lee 5/7, Patrick Scharrer 5/7, Ari Dale 5/7 U1800 FIDE =2nd (sharing 2nd junior) Jimmy Ying 4/7, Finley Dale 4/7$45 Junior 1st Jack Puccini 4.5/7 $65 NOTICES
