Reminder: Olympiad Selections - 40th
FIDE Chess Olympiad, Istanbul, Turkey The ACF is currently
seeking applications for the Australian Open and Women's Teams for the 40th
Chess Olympiad to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 27 August to 10 September
2012. (Ed: The original
notice follows) If you wish to be
considered for selection as a player, applications close on 31 March 2012.
Further information on the selection process is contained in the Selection
Notice which was published in the ACF Newsletter on 28 February 2012. It
would assist if you would provide all the information required under item 5.4
of the ACF's Selection Procedures By-Law - ie postal address, phone numbers
(mobile, home and business), date of birth, ACF and FIDE rating, FIDE titles
held and passport number and issue and expiry date. All applications that
have been received to date have been acknowledged. If you have sent an
application, but have not received an acknowledgement, please contact Tom
Saltmarsh on (03) 6223 5518 as soon as possible. Applications for

Director OLYMPIAD SELECTIONS - 40th
FIDE Chess Olympiad, Istanbul, Turkey Applications are invited for the Australian Open and
Women’s Olympiad Teams for the 40th Chess Olympiad to be
held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 27 August to 10 September 2012. An Open team and a Women’s team, each consisting of five
players and a non-playing captain, will be selected to represent
Australia at this event. Exact details of player entitlements are not yet
known but players and captains normally are entitled to full board from the
host organisation and travel subsidies from the ACF's Olympiad Appeal
fundraising efforts. APPLYING FOR
SELECTION Those wishing to be considered for selection as players must
apply by 31 March 2012. At a minimum, applications must contain the
information specified in item 5.4 of the ACF’s Selection Procedures By-Law. In addition,
applicants may provide: ·
a list or summary of their game or tournament results
over the previous two years (as per item 5.6); and/or ·
up to 400 words of comments in support of their
application (as per item 5.7). A text copy of the By-Law will be emailed on request. Applications must be sent by email to Tom Saltmarsh catowi@internode.on.net. If an application
has not been acknowledged as received within seven days, please phone (03)
6223 5518. Applicants' names, as well as all material provided to selectors
– eg ratings file; applicant lists or summary of game or tournament
results; and applicant comments - will all be published online at an address
to be announced, and available for public scrutiny, after applications close.
Any corrections or additions to this material must be submitted by 7 April
2012. Applicants will be advised of provisional selection results on or about
21 April 2012. The results will be finalised and made public on or about 28
April 2012 following the expiration of the appeal period. IMPORTANT NOTES FOR
APPLICANTS: 1. Please send any
application from an email address that you will check regularly (preferably
at least weekly) from the time of your application until the end of May 2012.
If you will not be contactable in the week after the selection deadline,
please apply well in advance of the deadline. 2. All applicants
should keep a copy of their application. Any claims for late application on
the grounds of email transmission problems will not be accepted unless
accompanied by a copy of the application and a letter from the sender's ISP
confirming that the application was sent. Evidence may be required for other
claims for late applications. 3. Activity Rule: An
applicant shall not be eligible for selection unless the applicant has played
at least 20 games in the 12 month period immediately prior to 31 March 2012
and at a normal (non-rapid) time limit. The games must be rated by the
ACF, FIDE or a national organisation for which rating formula conversion
details are known and the playing of the games can be verified. It is not
required that all 20 games be rated or even submitted for rating by 31 March
2012, so long as they will be rated at some stage. If you have not yet
reached your 20 games when you submit your application, please advise in
which events you intend to play to reach 20 games by the deadline. CAPTAINCIES Applications for captaincies will be called for in April 2012
with a closing date a few days after selections are made public. Unsuccessful
applicants for the teams are entitled to apply for a captaincy. Team captains
will then be selected by the ACF Council, taking into account, but not
necessarily bound by, the preferences and comments of team members. Exact
dates and processes for captaincy applications will be announced later. PROVISIONAL

Interschool Chess Championships The
Chess Association of Queensland (CAQ) invites interested parties to tender
for a licence to organise and conduct interschool team tournaments for
primary and secondary students throughout Queensland, and annual state finals
for qualifying teams from the tournaments, commencing January 1, 2013. The
licence will be issued for a five year period and is subject to the following
conditions:- 1. Payment of an annual licence fee (currently about $4
000 per year). 2. Qualifying tournaments shall be open to as many
schools as possible. 3. There is no limit on the number of teams schools may
enter. 4. The licensee must demonstrate suitable expertise and
infrastructure to perform the task. 5. The licensee is permitted to seek corporate
sponsorship, on condition that, if sponsorship of more than $2000 is
obtained, 20% of the total amount shall be paid to CAQ. 6. The licensee is expressly forbidden from seeking
government grants. 7. Annual performance reports shall be submitted to the
CAQ. 8. If a licensee's performance is considered by the CAQ
at any time to be unsatisfactory, the licence may be cancelled and issued to
another party. The
highest or any tender will not necessarily be accepted, and priority will be
given to licensees with demonstrated ability to provide satisfactory service
to regional areas. Tenders

Detecting chess cheating Dr
Kenneth Regan (USA) has produced a program which aims to assist detection of
computer cheating in chess by using a more sophisticated approach than merely
measuring the percentage of moves matching the first choice of engines to
calculate the computer-likeness of games. While this still involves drawing
the long bow of equating this with actual computer use it nevertheless
represents a considerable advance, especially in disproving spurious claims. Dr Regan is an IM rated 2390 on the latest list. See link for an article in the New York Times or your
favourite chess sites for further discussion. City of Sydney Championship FM Greg Canfell won this event with 6.5/7 from FM Tomek
Rej 5.5 and Michael Morris and Michael Hall 5. The event was played on Monday
nights, concluding 19 March, at the Sydney Chess Centre, Burwood and
attracted 28 players. Doeberl Cup sponsors O2C Doeberl Cup organisers are pleased to have new two
new sponsors on board for the Cup. Fairlane Canberra which is run by
Rosemarie Doeberl (daughter of Erik) is providing financial sponsorship to
assist with guarantees for Grand Masters. Fairlane Canberra is also providing
support for the attendance of Macauley Petersen who is producing videos
celebrating the 50th year of the Doeberl. Additionally CPS Credit Union has agreed to come on
board as a minor sponsor for 2012 through providing financial support to the

Amateurs These events will be held at the Parramatta RSL Club from 1 to 8
June 2012 immediately prior to the NSW Open at the same venue. The
ASIAN SENIORS Championship is open to Asian senior players. Males must have
reached their 55th birthday on or before 31 December 2012 (born before
01.01.1958). Females must have reached their 50th birthday on or before 31
December 2012 (born before 01.01.1963). The tournament will be played over 9
rounds under the swiss pairing system. The ASIAN
AMATEUR Championship is open to all Asian players who have a FIDE rating
below 2100 or are without a FIDE Rating. Players must not hold any GM, WGM,
IM, WIM, FM or WFM title and must not have been rated 2100 or above during
the past two years. The tournament will be played over 9 rounds under the
swiss pairing system. Both

Chess Festival - 20th April to 1st May 2012 We are
pleased to inform you that the Malaysian Chess Federation together with the
State of Melaka will be organizing the 750 Years Melaka International Chess
Festival from 20th April to 1st May 2012. The Melaka Festival offers 3 major
events which are the Florencio Campomanes Memorial International Rapid Chess
Championship, the Historical Melaka International Chess Championship and the
Historical Melaka Challenger Chess Championship. The Campomanes Memorial
offers a total prize fund of USD20,000, the Melaka International RM40,000 and
the Melaka Challenger RM10,000. The Florencio Campomanes Memorial
International Rapid Chess Championship will be held on 21st and 22nd of
April over 11 rounds using a time control of 25 minutes to finish. The Melaka International and Melaka Challenger will run
concurrent and will be held from 23rd April to 1st May 2012 played over 9
rounds using classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment
from move 1. The
prize fund offered for each of the event is USD20,000 for the Rapid event, RM
40,000 (approximately USD 13,000) for the International event and RM 10,000
(approximately USD3,500) for the Challenger event. Closing
date for the event is 9th April 2012* and entries received after this date
will only be accepted at the organizer’s discretion and will be

2012 Begonia Open, by
Gary Bekker A record 131 players took part, and this year’s
Begonia Open tournament was one of the strongest ever, with 22 participants
rated over 2100. We hope you enjoyed the tournament and look forward to
seeing you again next year. Details will be available on http://www.ballaratchess.com/. Please note that results,
performance charts, and estimated rating changes are available at http://www.auschess.tornelo.com/. As usual for this event, the pairings for the first two rounds
were accelerated. As well as pairing the top players against each other sooner,
this avoids the theoretical possibility of two players jointly winning the
event with a perfect score of 7/7 not having played each other. This led to some
tough encounters as early as round two including upset losses by Stephen
Solomon, Bobby Cheng, and Guy West. Further draws and upsets, left Domagoj
Dragicevic and Alistair Cameron sharing the lead with a perfect score going
into round 5. They drew their round 5 encounter, allowing overseas competitor
Patrick Scharrer (Ita) to join the lead. In round 6, Patrick Scharrer defeated Alistair Cameron,
and Domagoj Dragecevic defeated Stephen Solomon, to share the lead going into
the final round. [Ed: See below for
these key games.] Scharrer and Dragecevic quickly drew their final game,
and this allowed Brodie McClymont to join them in finishing equal first on 6
points. Equal fourth was shared by Bobby Cheng, IM Guy West, Dusan
Stojic,and Justin Tan on 5.5 points. Leon Kempen, who recently came equal
first in the Guam International, won the Group A division. Ballarat stalwart
Bas Van Rieland rapid improver Joseph Wong jointly won Group B. Group C
finished in a three-way tie between Marko Grabovac, Joe Flexmore, and Gary
Lin. Thanks to Chess World / Chess Kids for sponsoring the tournament
and providing their Tornelo tournament software. Thank you to Kevin Perrin,
Patrick Cook, and the Ballarat Chess Club organisers for hosting the event
and putting in an enormous amount of work to make the tournament run so smoothly.
As usual, Raelene Zelesco took some excellent photos of the tournament too.
Many others also supported the tournament and volunteered their time, and
this is very warmly appreciated. Although there were some problems with internet access,
and our game publishing on the internet, the tournament ran quite smoothly.
We would, however, appreciate your feedback on how we can make the tournament
better in future. Please feel free to email me your suggestions, no matter
how big or small. |
