OLYMPIAD APPEAL

The biennial Chess Olympiad is one of the world's biggest sporting events, and the most important teams event on the world chess calendar.

The 40th Olympiad is being held in the historic city of Istanbul where Turkey crosses the Bosporus from Europe into Asia.

Australia will be fielding an open and a women's team, each five of our best available players plus a team captain.

Unlike most competing nations, the Australian teams receive no government support and must pay their own way, a burden compounded by the distance involved from Australia to Turkey and the corresponding high air fares. They can't do it alone, but depend on the support of the Australian chess community. The more direct route via Dubai is expensive at that time of year; the cheapest available fares (on which the appeal target - $17,280 - is based) involve trans-China flights over 34 hours with three flight changes along the way (Guangzhou, Beijing and Urumqi) - a trip not for the faint-hearted!

We ask you all to give what you can to the ACF Olympiad Appeal, launched last weekend at the Ballarat Begonia Festival weekender. No donation is too large or too small - all will get the teams that much closer to Istanbul and will be acknowledged on the appeal site www.acfappeal.aunz.org (with complimentary hosting by iSage). The site allows painless and secure online payment facilities, as well as the traditional snail mail option.

WFM Megan Setiabudi won the ACT Women and Girls’ Championship this month, edging out Jo Mason on tie-break after both finished on 6/7 followed by Libby Smith 5. Other awards were:

2013 Bond University Australian Junior Chess Championships

We are pleased to advise that the 2013 Bond University Australian Junior Chess Championships will be hosted by Bond University, Varsity Lakes, Gold Coast from Saturday 19th January to Sunday 27th January 2013.

Bond University are the naming rights sponsor, and Vodafone the Gold sponsor.

The event will be organised and run by Gardiner Chess on a 'not for profit' basis on behalf of the Chess Association of Queensland.

2012 Asian Seniors and Asian Amateurs

These events will be held at the Parramatta RSL Club from 1 to 8 June 2012 immediately prior to the NSW Open at the same venue.

The ASIAN SENIORS Championship is open to Asian senior players. Males must have reached their 55th birthday on or before 31 December 2012 (born before 01.01.1958). Females must have reached their 50th birthday on or before 31 December 2012 (born before 01.01.1963). The tournament will be played over 9 rounds under the swiss pairing system.

The ASIAN AMATEUR Championship is open to all Asian players who have a FIDE rating below 2100 or are without a FIDE Rating. Players must not hold any GM, WGM, IM, WIM, FM or WFM title and must not have been rated 2100 or above during the past two years. The tournament will be played over 9 rounds under the swiss pairing system.

Both events will be FIDE-rated and played under the FIDE time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move starting from move one. Note entries close 14 May 2012 (late entries may be accepted with a late fee).

A Class 4 Grand Prix Tournament Open to all members from CV affiliated clubs, as well as Interstate, and international visitors and non members of affiliated clubs prepared to pay the $10 registration fee

Tournament: A 7 round swiss tournament.

Rate of Play: 90 min. per player per game plus 30 sec./move from move 1

Ratings: ACF rated and FIDE rated

2012 Billanook Chess Classic

The Billanook Chess Classic is a series of 4 allegro tournaments. Each tournament will have a minimum of $740 in cash prizes and there are overall series prizes in excess of $1000. In total, over $4000 in cash prizes will be on offer The series is organised by Northern Star Chess (Pearl Yung) and follows on from the successful Billanook College Chess Championship Cup series in previous years. The dramatic increase in prize-money is thanks to the major sponsor Billanook College. Billanook College is developing a strong association with the chess community and was the venue for the 2011 Australian Junior.

World Championship

The World Championship being contested in Moscow by defending champion GM Viswanathan Anand (Ind) and challenger GM Boris Gelfand (Isr) is almost over. The match finished 6-6 with one win each in the regular games and now goes into faster playoff games tomorrow (Wednesday 30 May) starting at 6pm AEST (noon Moscow time) – note this is three hours earlier than the other games.

Observers have generally rated the match as not overly exciting. Although many of the drawn positions were just about clinically dead rather than premature handshakes they featured little sustained drama overall, on or off the board, compared to most other World Championship matches.

University Teams Competitions

The 16th Rakan Muda International Inver-Varsity Championship, organised by the Tuanku Bahiyah Residential College of the University of Malaya, is to be played in Kuala Lumpur from 4 to 11 July 2012. Teams comprise a minimum of four players. Closing date for registration is 31 May 2012. The 12th World University Championship is to be played in Guimaraes, Portugal, from 19 to 26 August 2012. Teams comprise a minimum of three players. The closing date for “nominative” entries is 19 July 2012, however registration of intention to enter was required by 19 May, so entry may no longer be possible – suggest you check with the organisers asap if interested.
